How do I know what size solar module to buy?
The sizing of the solar module needs to be adequate to meet the load demands of the appliances you wish to use. There are a number of calculations needed. These include the amount of sunlight available in your location, the number and load drain of the appliances used and the expected usage of these appliances. If you don't feel comfortable estimating these factors yourself, please feel free to contact our technical staff. As a guide a small 5-watt module is sufficient to maintain the charge on a battery infrequently used for boating. An 80-watt module is typically used by caravan owners seeking to power lighting and small appliances, and 10 individual 150-watt modules for a small residential home.

How long do solar modules last?
Manufacturers typically give a warranty of 20 years on output. They are able to provide this, as there are no moving parts or chemicals to break down. The workmanship warranty is typically 2 years and covers such items as frame assembly, laminating and electrical connections.

Do solar modules work when there is no direct sunlight?
Solar modules will continue to work on cloudy days but at a reduced output. On a overcast day, output may be reduced by up to 90%

Can I connect a solar module directly to a battery?
Solar panels are design to charge a range of batteries with sufficient voltage to ensure optimum current flow to the battery. To ensure that batteries are not overcharged and permanently damaged, a charge controller is desirable to limit the battery charging when the battery nears a fully charged state. The charge controller is placed between the solar module and the battery to regulate the charge.

How long will it take to charge my battery?
Batteries are rated in amp hours and the solar module is rated in watts. This may be translated to the rate of charge in amp hours (Ah). As a guide, a 10 watt module will charge a battery at approximately 0.6Ah in bright sunlight. If the battery is rated at 6Ah capacity it will take a little over 10 hours to charge the battery from a discharged state.

How do I mount my solar panel?
All Green Systems supplied solar panels have a solid aluminium frame permitting the user to bolt the frame of the solar panel to a fixture, typically a backing plate or mounting arrangement.

How far can I extend the connection wires?
It is desirable to keep the connection wires as short as possible to reduce voltage-drop due to cable resistance. Your solar module will charge a battery with at least 6 metres of standard cable and further with heavy-duty cable.
